FOJO's new PICC line service

At the end of 2019 FOJO funded a one month placement at Addenbrookes hospital Cambridge, to enable our charity founder, Kerry Burnett the chance to learn the skill of placing peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC’s). Kerry had the privilege of working alongside the U.K.’s largest Nurse led IV access team.

PICC lines enable patients to receive their intravenous chemotherapy, whilst preserving the smaller veins in their lower arms. These lines are ideal for patients with a needle phobia. They also allow us to safely administer certain treatment through ambulatory pumps over 48 -96hrs, allowing patients to leave the department and receive their treatment in the comfort of their own homes.

Following Kerry’s time in Addenbrookes she returned to Jersey and has consolidated my learning working alongside the fantastic radiology team at the General Hospital. They have supported her practice and helped me establish my nurse led service.

FOJO have agreed to fund the PICC line service for 3 years which is fantastic for our Jersey Cancer patients. In addition the charity have also agreed to fund covers for the PICC lines which cost £17 each. These help keep the PICC lines dry whilst patients are showering, therefore minimising the risk of infections whilst these lines are in situ.

We am so proud to be part of this service and am truly grateful for the funds we receive. Which enable us to continue to make a positive impact on cancer patients treatment and care.
